Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong is writing the new music for a rock and roll adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.

The singer and guitarist is going to contribute material for the Yale Repertory Theater’s play, These Paper Bullets, which is a modern telling of Shakespeare’s legendary show.

Yale’s play focuses on a band from Liverpool as they struggle to cope with the pressure of working in the London music industry. Each musician also becomes embroiled in their own romantic endeavours too. The play is set to premiere in March 2014.

Armstrong has previously worked in theatre as the creator of Green Day’s Broadway show, American Idiot , which debuted in 2010.

Green Day are currently playing the concerts that they needed to cancel last year after Armstrong had a breakdown on stage in Las Vegas in September 2012. It was later revealed that he had become addicted to alcohol and insomnia pills.

During his problems on stage, which all started after band were forced to cut their set by 20 minutes, Armstrong took to the microphone to shout at the crowd, “Let me tell you something, I’ve been around since 19-*******-88. And you’re gonna give me one f****** minute? You’ve gotta be f****** me!”

He then also told the audience that he wasn’t Justin Bieber before then smashing his guitar on stage and storming to the back.

Discussing Armstrong’s recovery, Green Day’s bass player, Mike Dirnt, stated, “It’s nerve-wracking playing these shows after Billie Joe’s rehab. The shit really hit the fan but we’re ready to get the f*** out of home again.”

Green Day have also announced that they will headline several European festival dates, which includes performing at Reading and Leeds Festivals in England as well as taking part in a huge show at London’s Emirates stadium in June.

Are you looking forward to hearing Billie Joe Armstrong’s composition for Yale?
